Mike Smit awarded a Research Develoment Fund grant

Dr. Mike Smit has been awarded a Research Development Fund (RDF) grant from the Faculty of Graduate Studies to support his exploration of the impact of open information on civic engagement.  The RDF supports “activities that develop, increase, or strengthen research excellence”.  Dr. Smit’s project will work with community partners to make information relevant to how Nova Scotia is governed more available, accessible, and usable through a website that encourages searching, sharing, and learning. The project team will then assess how that information affects the extent to which citizens engage with society: through volunteering, political attentiveness, voting, discussing political/social issues, donating, or contacting elected officials. The grant will enable the recruitment of a student research assistant to participate in this project.

Mike Smit joins GRAND

Dr. Mike Smit has joined the GRAND project as a collaborating network investigator, and has been awarded a Young Network Investigator Award.  GRAND (Graphics, Animation, and New Media) is a federally funded Network of Centres of Excellence project that includes over 100 investigators and almost 500 graduate students and postdocs from 26 Canadian universities, working within 34 sub-projects organized into 5 overlapping themes, with over 60 industry, government, and non-profit partners. Dr. Smit will join a sub-project that examines the GRAND community itself, where he will study how new members of research teams discover relevant research, how open information about the project can be leveraged to improve cohesiveness and collaboration, and how networked research activities can be better supported with information and communication technologies.

Vivian Howard has been invited to join the National Reading Campaign

Over the past four years, hundreds of Canadians — readers, educators, librarians, publishers, parents, and writers from every part of the country — met at a series of three National Reading Summits to create a National Reading Plan. The National Reading Plan addresses ways to ensure that all Canadians — regardless of age, background, income level, level of education, or location — have access to reading of all kinds and in all platforms. The National Reading Campaign will begin the work of putting this exciting and challenging plan into place from coast to coast.  Vivian Howard has been invited to join the National Reading Campaign as Atlantic Canadian representative on the Campaign Outreach Committee.  The focus of the National Reading Campaign fits well with Dr. Howard’s research interests into the role of pleasure reading for diverse groups.  For more information on the National Reading Campaign, see http://nationalreadingcampaign.ca/
