I would like to thank the Dalhousie School of Information Management Associated Alumni for hosting last night’s very successful and enjoyable reception. Special thanks to event organizers Jessica Babineau, Elinor Crosby, Sara Kneževi?, Jenn Mitton, and JoAnn Watson. We had two video presentations from Jessica Babineau and Jenn Reid, who could not be with us. Jessica welcomed everyone and paid tribute to Patrick Ellis, the 2012 Alumnus of the Year. Jenn encouraged the audience to contribute to the Stephanie Downs Memorial Award and made a very touching tribute to Steph. Patrick provided us with an enjoyable insight into the nature of his work and the various projects in which he has been involved, and served as an inspiration to all the students present. I very much look forward to next year’s event.

On behalf of the School of Information Management, I would like to extend my congratulations to Dr. Joyline Makani, who received her doctorate at yesterday’s Fall Convocation ceremonies. Joyline has been a long-standing instructor at the School, as well as the liaison librarian for the Faculty of Management. Joyline is also an alumna of our MLIS program. Yesterday’s ceremony was particularly touching, as Dr. Sunny Marche, Joyline’s supervisor, was honoured. Having had the pleasure of serving on Joyline’s PhD committee, I know how committed Dr. Marche was to Joyline’s scholarly endeavours, and I am sure he was with her in spirit yesterday.
I would like to extend my congratulations to the following SIM students who will be convocating today, October 3, 1012:
MLIS Program
Melissa Goertzen
Jason Harris

We take great pride in your accomplishments and wish you all the best in your careers. Please keep in touch with us, as we very much enjoy hearing about your career developments.

Hello SIM Students and Faculty,
A new speaker has been added to this Friday’s Canadian Association of Law Libraries Information Session.
Margaret Murphy is the current Legislative Librarian at the Nova Scotia Legislature. Last year she was chosen to receive SIM’s Outstanding Alumni Award, which you can read about here:
Ms. Murphy will be joining fellow librarians, Mark Lewis of the Dunn Law Library and Cyndi Murphy of Stewart McKelvey LLP on the panel for this Friday’s information session. She will add a unique government library perspective to the discussions on careers in law librarianship.
The CALL Student Interest Group encourages you all to attend this session on Friday and to take advantage of this opportunity to meet these three Library Professionals. The floor will be opened for students to be able to address their questions directly to either one or all three of our panel members. For those of you who are planning to attend, we recommend that you have a few questions prepared for the professionals about their careers, workplaces or about the Canadian Association of Law Libraries.
You can read more about the session on the CALL Student Interest Group blog
Below are the full event details:
Sincerely,
Hilary Stamper

Information Without Borders (IWB) is a MLIS student-run conference that is put on each year. This year the committee decided to run a survey during the conference planning to resolve some questions we had based on last year’s post-conference survey results. First years are invited to complete the survey as well as we want to know what you anticipate or hope for from this year’s conference. Everyone’s replies are helpful.
To get an idea or a refresher on what went on last year, the IWB 2012 website is still up here. You will hear about the 2013 website when it becomes live.
Click here to start the survey!
If you complete the survey and enter your email at the end you will be entered to win a 10$ gift card from Just Us! Coffee, which has locations on Spring Garden and Barrington Streets.
If you have any questions about the survey or the conference in general, please email iwb@dal.ca.
SIM student Michael Groenendyk has recently met with team members from CBCL Ltd. Consulting Engineers to discuss the potential for utilizing his SIM-based research into 3D printing and scanning technologies to better visualize their structural designs.
Working with CBCL Ltd., a sponsor of the Dalhousie Libraries’ recent 3D printing and scanning project, Michael hopes to turn Nova Scotian GIS LIDAR data into 3D printable computer aided design (CAD) models. Once 3D printed, these models could be assembled to create a very accurate reproduction of Nova Scotian topography, including lakes, farmland and trees. By then 3D printing variations of a single structural design, such as a bridge or a water treatment facility, and interchanging them with each other, engineers will have a better idea of how each design would change the overall appearance of the area.
If this project is successful it could help change the way that projects involving the construction of large structures are planned and developed in the future.

I have participated in this program since its inception and it has been a wonderful opportunity to meet the new professionals coming into our field, have great conversation and also learn a lot about the exciting new things happening at SIM.
For the past ten years, the Professional Mentorship Program (PMP) has provided an opportunity for library practitioners and information managers from a variety of organizations to share their experiences with students enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program. Since its inception, there have been over 350 partnerships made in which students have gained valuable insights into the working life of practicing librarians, archivists and information professionals.
Each participating professional is matched with an MLIS student for the duration of the academic year. The program is very flexible, with each pair determining the nature of the partnership. In previous years activities have included resume and job searching advice, meeting for coffee, tours of libraries and workplaces, and attending meetings and workshops together. There will be an opening reception on October 25th to start the program and give partners an opportunity to meet, as well as a wrap up event at the end of the winter term.
Spending time with students is a rewarding experience. It is always useful to keep in touch with what new librarians and information managers are thinking and learning, and to see the attitudes and interests they will be bringing to the workplace.
If you are interested in participating in the 2012-2013 Professional Mentorship Program, please complete the attached participation form and return it to the Dalhousie CLA Student Chapter by October 5, 2012. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the CLA Student Chapter at dalhousiecla@gmail.com.
