Considering community: A radio documentary by SIM student Megan Clark
There has been a growing emphasis in the last few years on the role of public libraries as community spaces. To explore this idea, I spent the fall of 2012 speaking to public librarians from across the country to see what public libraries are doing in their communities, how they are changing, how they are staying the same, and the challenges they are facing. I found libraries that are overcoming barriers to access and libraries that take their role as public spaces very seriously. And in all my conversations I looked for community, to find out what it is and what public libraries have to do with it.
As part of Freedom to Read week, Considering Community will be broadcast on CKDU 88.1FM and online at ckdu.ca

SIM student involved in Killam Library artist-in-residence project.
It is my pleasure to announce the successful candidate of the Killam Library artist-in-residence project: William Robinson. William’s work employs video, performance, sculpture, drawing and other media to investigate the culture of sound and social architecture. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, having shown in New York, Bergen and Berlin, as well as in Toronto at Nuit Blanche and in Halifax at Nocturne. William will be doing two public talks/presentations during his six-week residency, which begins on Monday. The dates for these public talks are not yet confirmed.
The idea for this residency came from SIM student, artist and Killam intern Nancy McPhee. The funding came through an HRM grant. The Killam is partnering with the Dalhousie Art Gallery on this initiative.
