Alumni updates:
- Edwin N Qobose (MLIS ’83): New publication: “Renovated library space at the University of Botswana: A re-appraisal” (chapter 10); Title of Volume: Space and collections earning their keep: transformation, technologies and re-tooling.
- Hannah Steeves (MLIS ’16): Hannah crossed the street from the Rowe building to fulfill a one year term position at the Sir James Dunn Law Library as an Instruction and Reference Librarian with Dalhousie.
- Yusuke Fitzgibbons (Ishimura) (MLIS ’07): Joined Tokyo City University as Assistant Professor in March 2016. He teaches and supervises students in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, specializing in information management and technology skills. He actively works on university-wide initiatives related to education futures strategy and internationalization. He is also involved in supporting a study abroad program with his previous employer, Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.
- Peter Webster (MLIS ’86): Peter works as the Associate University Librarian, IT Services, Patrick Power Library, Saint Mary’s University. This year he:
- Continued as Co-Chair of the External Advisory Committee of the Statistic’s Canada Data Liberation Initiative (DLI). This initiative celebrated its’ 20th anniversary this year and Peter spoke at the anniversary celebration in Ottawa this spring.
- Oversaw an inventory of Canadian associated research data repositories, in cooperation with Scholars Portal, in Ontario, the Canadian National Research Council, Research Data Canada, Re3data.org and Karlsruher Institut fur Technologie (KIT), in Germany. Nearly 250 Canadian associated research data repositories are now listed in org, and the Canadian National Research Council Gateway to Research Data. Special thanks to current MLIS student Nora McGruer, who worked as Research Assistant on this project.
- Served as principle investigator for the 2016 EDUCAUSE Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology. Results from the EDUCAUSE studies can be seen here.
- Presented the following article at the IATUL conference in Halifax (June 2016): “Gaining the Benefits of Scholarly Social Networks”. International Association of University Libraries, (IATUL) Conference Proceedings, 2016 (to be published soon).
Student updates:
- Scarlett Kelly (MLIS/MPA): September 2nd, 2016 Scarlett published a book entitled “Digital Information Revolution Changes in Canada: E-Government Design, the Battle Against Illicit Drugs, and Health Care Reform”. It is now for sale on Amazon, Kobo, and iTune. The book can also be found on Google books.
