Jina Lee is third-year Bachelor of Commerce student from Korea, majoring in International Business. She completed her first co-op work term in Korea, working for an engineering company as an administrative assistant, and is now completing her second work-term with Dalhousie’s Faculty of Management, thanks in part to her experience participating in the Workplace Experience Program, which matches international students with Canadian employers for 35 hours of job-shadowing experience.

With the goal of gaining knowledge of the Canadian workplace, Jina applied to the program and was matched with Dalhousie’s Faculty of Management. During her program experience, she worked with several of the Faculty’s marketing and communications team members, where she spent time supporting convocation day promotions, learning about social media marketing, planning video production and developing email campaign messaging.

Jina shares that her experience in the program was extremely beneficial for networking and helped to provide her with the experience and confidence she needed that helped her to secure multiple job interviews with Canadian organizations, and ultimately land her most recent work-term placement.

“I would definitely recommend this program to any international student. It will help you with your future job search, and who knows, it may even help you to get a job! If I hadn’t participated in the Workplace Experience Program, I wouldn’t have been as likely to secure the number of job interviews I obtained”.

This upcoming Monday, we’ll be recognizing the contributions and successes of everyone involved in this past year’s Workplace Experience Program and C3 Mentoring Program. If you are interested in participating in either of these events next summer, watch out for information sessions to be held in early 2017.

Student Spotlight: Nicola Scott

Nicola is a third-year Bachelor of Management student majoring in Leadership and Organization with interests in Human Resources and Social Media. She completed her work placement with Techsploration in the summer as their Resource Management Project Coordinator. Below, Nicola discusses how the C³ Mentoring Program helped her advance and achieve her career goals.

“I heard about the C³ Mentoring Program though Management Career Services’ e-mails and felt it was an excellent opportunity to be able to work for a local non-profit while receiving my own mentorship. I was lucky enough to work at Techsploration, a non-profit that focuses on exposing young women to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers. The C³ Mentoring Program not only allowed me to work full-time during the summer, but gain valuable presentation, research, and communication skills that I have used in my classes and will benefit me in my upcoming internship. I also received a mentor, Tricia Keegan, who is the Facility Manager for Emera Energy Rhode Island. She was a valuable resource and I am thankful I had someone in her position to provide advice and answer my questions.

As a third-year Management student participating in the internship component of my degree, the C³ Mentoring Program allowed me to have a taste of what my internship will be like. While working at Techsporation, I was able to discover a cause I’m passionate about, all while expanding my professional network.

My suggestions to anyone interested in applying to the C³ Mentoring Program are to take advantage of all the resources available through Management Career Services and to apply for the jobs that align with your personal interests. My participation in the C³ Mentoring Program has been one of my favourite experiences at Dalhousie.”

Halifax Employer Happenings

Our Halifax-based Employer Development Manager, Ayse Dai-Gammon, talks about the connections she’s made and initiatives she’s been a part of this fall and the unique engagement opportunities she’s excited about this winter.

As we approach the tail end of 2015, I’m able to reflect on another busy fall recruitment season full of great employer development and talent recruitment outcomes. Although most of our major fall recruitment events happen every year, we at Management Career Services always find new ways to enhance the experience for both employers and students.

We kicked off the semester with the Corporate Residency MBA Interview Day which saw 23 employers (10 of which were new employer partners) participate in the event. The lead up to Interview Day is always full of anticipation: from the portfolio of candidates employers receive in late July, to the live elevator pitches and Corporate Networking Reception that takes place before, our CRMBA students are eager to impress and the feedback we receive from our employer guests consistently reflects that they are impressed too. This year, we were able to follow three employers and three students through the Interview Day experience which will result in a new promotional video coming in early 2016 – I’ll be anxious to share that with you in the next issue of Management Connections!

Career Discovery Days is the title we give to the extensive lineup of employer information sessions, networking events, panel discussions and workshops that take place in September and October. This fall, thanks to the incredible presence of our employer partners on campus, we were able to offer over 40 events, with representation from companies that spanned a wide range of industries. Our Finance, Accounting, and Marketing networking events were particularly popular and resulted in a full house each night. This year, we added a Marketing employer panel which was very well received by our students.

New this fall was a Partnership Appreciation Event that combined our annual gathering of 2015 C3 Mentoring Program participants with the 2015 Workplace Experience Program participants. Not only did our guests enjoy a great opportunity to network but it gave us and our students a chance to express our gratitude for the mentorship, sponsorship, and positive impact that the employers involved had on the careers – and lives – of these business undergrads. It was a very special night indeed.

I also had the pleasure of attending a number of great industry events this fall including: the Atlantic Canada Campus Recruitment Summit in September; The Innovacorp Student and Start-Up Meet ‘n Greet we co-organized with Innovacorp Group in October; and in November the Halifax Chamber of Commerce Fall Dinner and recent launch of Halifax Partnership’s Game Changers Action Plan – just to name a few! It’s very exciting to see the increasing collaboration and momentum to take action in offering meaningful co-op and recent graduate opportunities that will keep our young and talented workforce in Atlantic Canada.

These are just a few of the highlights from my employer development activities this fall. It leaves me feeling energized and encouraged about the promise that 2016 holds for our employers and students. Student Spotlight: John McNally

John McNally is a Bachelor of Management student majoring in Environment, Sustainability and Society. As a participant in the C³ Mentoring Program, John spent the summer working at Phoenix Youth Programs, a non-profit organization that helps youths in need, with guidance from his corporate mentor from Emera. John talks about the value of his experience with the C³ Mentoring Program.

“The C³ program was an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience while making a difference in my community. My work with Phoenix Youth Programs was fast paced and varied, allowing me to gain real world experience while developing projects and learning new skills. With a project set ranging from strategic visioning, developing fundraising campaigns, creating marketing materials and event planning to name just a few, the organization gave me experience in a range of relevant areas of business.

In addition to working with Phoenix, I had the opportunity to develop my professional network by pairing with a corporate mentor who works for Emera. She not only helped me gain new insight, but provided an invaluable voice of experience as I encountered new challenges in my placement. Her guidance allowed me to better contextualize and frame issues as they arose. I was even given opportunities to meet members of the team at Emera and develop contacts that I may work with in the future.

The skills and contacts I developed make the program invaluable and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to launch their career. The combination of non-profit experience, which brings together the benefits of working with a smaller team with the innovative capacity of a start-up, and the opportunity to work with a mentor creates a support system that will allow any student to make the most of their placement.”

Student Spotlight: Mackenzie Knowles

Mackenzie is a fourth year Business Management student who is passionate about entrepreneurship and innovation. She is the Vice President of Project Development at Enactus Dalhousie and also a Grad Year Representative for the Management Society. Mackenzie loves to be involved and be a leader in and outside of the Rowe building. This past summer she was a part of the C3 Mentoring Program offered through Management Career Services and worked at SickKids Foundation as a Finance Co-op student, generously sponsored by P&G. She is currently focused on finding a job with a start-up to learn the ins and outs a business while also strengthening her own skills, to one day start her own business.

“This past year I have attended information sessions for businesses like TJX and Write Your Best Cover Letter and Succeed In Your Job Interview workshops offered by Management Career Services. I wanted to attend these workshops to gain as much knowledge as possible before I lose access to such amazing resources.

More recently, I attended the Succeed In Your Job Interview preparation workshop, to make sure that I do everything before, during, and after an interview that will help me to be a top candidate for that position. While some parts of the workshop may have been a review of things a fourth year student like myself should know, I still learned new tips and practices.

Set aside time and attend these workshops because they prepare you to succeed in your job hunting and, ultimately, your career. Learning simple things like sending thank you cards or e-mails to your interviewers after an interview is very important. As well, learning to search your interviewers on LinkedIn before the interview can help you become a more attractive candidate. I recommend all students take advantage of these workshops because it doesn’t hurt to learn more.”

Student Spotlight: Emily McAughey

Emily McAughey is currently in her fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce Co-op Program with a major in Marketing Management. She has been involved with the Dalhousie Commerce Society for four years, currently holding the position of Vice President Academic.

Emily has taken advantage of each of her Commerce Co-op opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in the fields she is most passionate about. On her second work term, Emily worked as a Marketing Intern for Nickelodeon and MTV Canada, exposing her to the entertainment industry. Through MTV, Emily discovered an interest in pursuing opportunities in this industry, as well as an aspiration to follow her passion for helping her community through not-for-profit organizations.

The National Mentoring Program, which was recently renamed the C³ Mentoring Program, provided Emily with the opportunity to further explore the entertainment industry, while working in the Halifax community. This summer, Emily worked as the Outdoor Film Experience Coordinator for the Atlantic Film Festival through the C³ Mentoring Program. Emily’s position involved planning and assisting in the execution of the Outdoor Film Experience events (a total of 16 outdoor movie screenings). Emily has been able to add a wide range of event planning and marketing related skills to her resume through her position with the AFF, which will aid her search for a full-time position after graduation.

“Through the C³ Mentoring Program, I was provided with a mentor through my corporate sponsor Emera. In partnership with both my AFF supervisor and my C³mentor, I was able to build my network and gain valuable connections in both Halifax and Toronto.

I would highly recommend the C³ Mentoring Program to students who are looking for an incredible opportunity to work within a not-for-profit organization, while developing skills that will be beneficial throughout your future career.”

2014 Marks Another Successful Year for National Mentoring Program #NMP2014

On October 24, 2014, students, non-profit supervisors, and corporate mentors and sponsors gathered together to wrap-up another successful year for Dalhousie University’s National Mentoring Program. To see more photos from the event, visit the Facebook album.

Once again, program participants demonstrated how corporate social responsibility can be put into action, create meaningful change and positively impact the community. Six students spent their summer working for non-profit organizations thanks to the generous support and corporate mentorship of our program sponsors:

Emera

Mohammed Siddique, Natural Gas Trader for Emera, mentored BComm student Corey Kirkhus as he worked for the Halifax chapter of AIESEC. Corey initiated a networking and business development corporate event to introduce the business community to AIESEC Halifax.
Melanie Nadeau, Senior Manager, Sustainability for Emera, mentored BComm student Emily McAughey as she worked for the Atlantic Film Festival. Emily coordinated more free outdoor film events than any other year (17 events in just 12 weeks); implemented and promoted new accessibility options to allow more community members to attend.
Anne-Marie Curtis, Director, Marketing & Sales for Nova Scotia Power, mentored BComm student Catherine Giffen as she worked for the Canadian Mental Health Association – Halifax/Dartmouth. Catherine updated and improved the look/feel of the CMHA’s annual report; designed and helped publicly launch the new storefront in North End Halifax; improved the inventory management processes, and more!

RBC

Kim Ping Yim, Senior Account Manager for RBC, mentored BMgmt student Andrew Faircloth as he worked for Prostate Cancer Canada. Andrew created a volunteer engagement map and feasibility study,that benchmarked PCC Atlantic’s volunteer progress, and will aid in events and recruitment efforts.

Wilsons

Catherine Baker, Wholesale Manager for Wilsons Security, mentored BMgmt student Sydney Hoegy as she worked for United Way Halifax. Sydney improved the process for researching donors and the organization’s capacity to engage with stakeholders which has helped increase fundraising and raise awareness.

P&G

Mike Kerwin, Senior Account Executive with P&G, mentored BMgmt student Mackenzie Knowles as she worked for Sick Kids Foundation. MacKenzie updated the policies and procedures in Finance & Accounting, mapped the processing of donor gifts to identify efficiencies and ensure accuracy, coordinated events and more!

Thanks to these partnerships, the result was not only an enhanced experiential education for our student participants, but significant and meaningful acts of corporate social responsibility, and the development of important projects with community focus and impact.
