“I’ve always been interested in books and literacy,” says Keriann Dowling, when asked about what drew her to do a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) degree. “I’ve been interested in being a librarian since I did a project in tenth grade about different professions,” she adds. She started the MLIS program as soon as she finished her English degree from King’s.
Keriann is spending her summer as an intern in the Killam Library, fresh out of her first year in the MLIS program. She is not a new face around the Killam though; Keriann spent last year working in the Killam as a student assistant. “Shelving books last year really taught me where things are in this library,” she says.
“When the internship opportunity came up, I knew I wanted to work at the Killam because it had been such a welcoming environment last year. I was also intrigued by the projects at the Killam, specifically working on the faculty profiles, because it relates to skills I learned in Professor Lawson’s Electronic Text Design course [part of the MLIS program],” says Keriann.
In addition to working on the faculty profiles, she’s also been offering information assistance at the Killam Library Service Point (formerly the circulation desk). Last week, Keriann completed a tutorial about how to renew books. “Making that video tutorial was a lot of fun because I got to be creative and use my technical skills as well. There was a lot of editing involved,” she says.
Keriann is interested in working in public libraries, but the work she is doing at the Killam has piqued her interest in academic libraries as well. Wherever her career will take her, she is happy in the knowledge that she will be helping people.
