Jenna is a third year commerce student from Calgary, Alberta who is currently wrapping up her second co-op semester with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Through the online job market, Jenna was able to find opportunities at PwC and personally reached out to the communications director to set up an informational interview. In her current role, Jenna works closely with the marketing and communications team at PwC to facilitate events and marketing initiatives. Jenna offers the following advice on achieving success in the workplace.
“I find the biggest challenge starting a new position is learning the company culture. Each company has its own unique set of systems, norms and even dress code, so settling into these new standards can be difficult at first. My best strategy was to ask as many questions as possible while learning my role, and I quickly became comfortable with my assigned tasks.
Your success in the workplace will also depend on your initiative and dedication. As co-op students, many of us are just entering into the workforce, so what we lack in direct experience we need to make up for in enthusiasm and willingness to work hard. Just as you would in an interview, show what you can offer your employer throughout your work term. Expressing your interest to learn and your ability to put in extra effort will show that you’re committed to your role and the success of the organization.”
