Etse Kassa knew that work experience would be key to her success in transitioning from her undergraduate degree to a career. Dalhousie’s co-op program was one of the main factors that lead her to choose the Dalhousie Bachelor of Commerce degree. Her decision paid off as her first employer post-graduation was impressed by the variety of experience she acquired during her co-ops.
Etse enjoyed many of her classes over her four years at Dalhousie but the course that stands out the most is, Business in a Global Context. It pushed her to learn about topics happening globally and then tie the topics back to concepts they were learning in class. The professors in the Dalhousie Commerce program taught Etse a lot and she says that the most important lesson that she learned from a professor was to, “always think critically. To do your due diligence and know things thoroughly. Being prepared is not only useful in school but in everyday life.”
She recognized that there was always something happening within the Dal community and the different clubs and organizations were a great way to meet and connect with Dalhousie students outside of your program. Etse credits the Dalhousie Commerce program with creating the academic and professional foundation that has helped with her confidence and success. This foundation has led Etse to further her education by returning to school for her MBA.
Her advice for Commerce students is to, “Explore your options as much as possible. Being in school is such a great way to see what is out there. Speak to the various professors and hear what they have to say about what they do and the industries they work in. It is a great way to get information about various industries and explore what you would like to do.”
