Meet Lukas Beaton, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce Co-op student pursuing a major in Finance. Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Lukas was drawn to Dalhousie’s excellent reputation and mandatory co-op program. “I believe that getting real-world experience is crucial for my future career.”
During his first co-op this past winter, Lukas worked with Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, a non-profit organization advancing ocean research. As a Growth Analyst, he researched and compiled ocean-related opportunities into a digital hub, making it easier to access ocean sector opportunities. “I worked on creating the digital hub with over 600 unique programs that people can explore to get involved in the ocean sector. It was exciting to contribute to something that can have a positive impact,” Lukas says. He also analyzed the data to create a comprehensive report that will guide future investments. “The report I created outlines the various programs available, their locations, and potential gaps. It’s essential information for future funding decisions and investment strategies.”
Lukas also embraced the opportunity to contribute to the organization’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee by helping to make the funding process more inclusive. “I found it quite interesting to be on the committee. It helped me understand the challenges in creating an inclusive environment.”
Management Career Services (MCS) supported Lukas’ job search by providing resources and guidance. “MCS has been great in helping me find co-op opportunities,” he says. “They provided valuable resources and assisted me in the application process. I’m grateful for their dedicated support.”
Looking ahead, Lukas is excited about securing his next co-op in a finance role and applying the skills gained during his first work term. “I’m eager to apply my learnings and make a meaningful impact in finance. I believe my co-op experiences will prepare me for the challenges ahead.”
Lukas’ advice for you:
- Begin your job search early to give yourself ample time to explore and secure the right opportunity.
- Embrace new experiences, and don’t let fear hold you back from achieving your goals. Co-ops are a great way to grow both personally and professionally.
