Shawn Hewat is a third year Commerce student, majoring in Marketing Management. For her first co-op, she worked at InNetwork Inc. in Halifax, and worked for Publicis in Toronto, for her second co-op work term.
“I secured my co-ops through networking. For my first co-op, I looked for small marketing firms within Halifax on LinkedIn and discovered that I had a connection in common with someone who worked at InNetwork. I got their contact information and reached out to the company, explaining my interest in digital marketing and start-ups.
After first year, I went on the Toronto Corporate Tour. One of the stops on the Corporate Tour was Publicis. We had the opportunity meet the people who worked there and learn more about what marketing agencies do. When searching for a second co-op placement, I got in contact with some of the people I had met at Publicis and secured an interview.
I have been very lucky with my past two work terms. I think that a successful work term is one where you become fully involved in the work that goes on, as well in the company culture. It’s important to always ask for more work and to try to meet as many people in the office environment as you can throughout your work term.
For my last co-op, I am working at a tech start-up in Toronto, named Nudge Rewards. I wanted to work for a smaller company that is related to marketing, sustainability, and technology and after doing some research I came across Nudge Rewards.”
