Create a Dalhousie Email Alias
A personalized email address will help you in your job search, because it will reinforce your name in the minds of hiring managers and prospective employers. Dalhousie students are provided with an official Dalhousie email account. Most commonly, your email address will be assigned with two letters followed by a series of 6 numbers corresponding with your student number @dal.ca. A challenge that students face with this system is that the emails are difficult to remember, impersonal, and prone to creating confusion if they are not typed correctly. This is why Dalhousie offers you the ability to create up to 3 unique aliases, or alternate emails that will direct your email to the same email inbox. A personalized email is more professional, and will make it easier for a potential employer to contact you.
As an example:
Official Dalhousie Email: jd111111@dal.ca
Dalhousie Email Alias: Jane.Doe@dal.ca
As you can see, the email alias is a lot more professional and easier to remember. When applying for jobs this can make a significant impact on the professionalism of your application and help to eliminate any errors that are common when transcribing numerical email addresses.
Creating Your Dalhousie Email Alias
Step 1 –Go to https://aliasmanagement.dal.ca/login
Step 2 – You will be asked for your login information which is the information you use to login to your email account currently. Be patient as it may take a minute to load your options.
Step 3 – Under the Alias Suggestions section, you are generally presented with four options. Three of these options are pre-determined available aliases and the fourth option gives you an opportunity to create your own. Click on the option that you like best and then click the “request” button. We typically recommend firstname.lastname@dal.ca email addresses whenever possible.
Step 4 – You should receive a confirmation once the alias has been created, and you will be able to receive email within 15 minutes. If you choose the fourth option to create your own, your email alias must first be approved by an administrator, which may take several days.
Things To Remember
- Your old address and new address are active accounts and they both will go to the same inbox
- You must login to your email inbox using your original login information
- Aliases are not case sensitive so jane.doe@dal.ca and Jane.Doe@dal.ca both work to direct your mail to the same inbox
- You can have up to three aliases at a time but we recommend only having one alias
- You can retain your Dal email account for life after you graduate as long as you keep it active. Click here for more details.

Is there a help article on how to set up aliases in email clients? Logon with my alias is not working for the new office 365 servers. I have to use my nt******@dal.ca address.
