Research of the New Millennium
An Interdisciplinary Student Health Conference

The School of Health and Human Performance Graduate Student Society’s 10th annual Crossroads Conference was held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Dalhousie University.

Designed as an adjudicated, peer-reviewed academic forum for undergraduate and graduate students, Crossroads is a unique opportunity for students to showcase and engage in dialogue about their innovative health research. Emphasizing the importance of inter-disciplinary exchange, the conference includes submissions from a wide range of health-related disciplines, such as health promotion, leisure, kinesiology, nursing and health administration.

Helping Caregivers Care for Themselves

Andi Celine Martin (Kinesiology)

Andi Celine Martin is a student at Dalhousie who is pursuing her Master’s of Science in Kinesiology.  She is working on a study that focuses exclusively on caregivers who directly support someone undergoing cancer treatments.  She cites a 2008 study published in the Journal of Aging and Health that says caregivers experience the same amount of, if not more, psychological distress than the cancer survivor they support.  Many things contribute to this stress, including the caregiver’s ability to take care of their own health.

Martin has set up a yoga class to see whether physical activity, which has been proven to have a positive effect on mental health, will help the caregivers in her study.  The participants in her study range in age from 25 to 64 and since most of them have no experience, Martin says she will start out easy.

Student Congratulations – Mohammed Al-hamdani

Congratulations to Mohammed Al-hamdani, a recent graduate of the Master of Health Administration program.  Mohammed entered the 2011 American Academy for Medical Administrators’ (AAMA’s) student paper award competition with students competing from at least 70 universities in North America.  His outstanding tobacco litigation review, “Health Care Cost Recovery: Lessons for Canada from the U.S. Litigation Experiences” was one of the top five papers in the competition and he was the only applicant from Canada to receive an honourable mention – the other four students were enrolled in American universities.  The review has been published by the AAMA, and Mohammed has been invited to present the topic at the National Conference on Tobacco or Health in Toronto.

 
Mohammed’s work has also been recognized in the past – his thesis on the plain packaging of cigarettes (completed under the supervision of Dr. Chris Simms) is listed as one of the resources on the Physicians for a Smoke Free Canada website.  He also won national and international awards and scholarships during his time at Dalhousie.  Mohammed describes tobacco control as his passion, and credits the support and resources offered by Dalhousie and the School of Health Administration for his achievements.

The School of Health and Human Performance recently hosted “Meeting at the Crossroads:  Interdisciplinary Student Health Research Conference.”  This conference provides an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to present and work toward a publication.  The Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre sponsored prizes for the best paper in undergraduate and graduate categories.  The winners were as follows:

Best Graduate Oral Presentation – Erica Brooks (Health Promotion Candidate, Dalhousie).  Supervisor – Dr. Anita Unruh.  “Exploring the Lived Experience of Adults Using Prescription Opiods to Manage Chronic Non-Cancer Pain.”

Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation – Gillian Pritchard (Health Promotion Candidate, Dalhousie).  Supervisor – Dr. Debbie Martin.  “Aboriginal Perspectives on Water:  How Does Water Contribute to Overall Health and Well-Being?”

Graduate Poster Presentation – Emily Murray (MA Health Promotion Graduate, Dalhousie) “The Experience of Canadian Childhood Cancer Survivors Transferring to the Adult Health Care System.”

Undergraduate Poster Presentation – Rachel Mullenger (BSc Kinesiology – St. FX) “The Roles of Peer Mentors in Enhancing School-Based Physical Activity:  Phase 1.”
