Stephen Pace is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student who did his first co-op term at Freshman Services, an entrepreneurial moving and storage business started by a Dalhousie alumnus, and has successfully secured his second co-op at TJX for the fall. Stephen shares his experience with the TJX hiring process and offers some advice to fellow students.
“I secured the Merchandise Assistant position at TJX by being thorough at each stage of the hiring process. The first phase was a screening interview which lasted 20 minutes. The second phase included a personality test, and a Microsoft Excel evaluation. The third step was a 40 minute interview. The final step was an extensive reference check. I did numerous revisions to both my resume and cover letter to ensure that it was tailored to the job description. To prepare for each interview I practiced mock questions out loud. I also did thorough research to ensure that I was familiar with TJX’s values and their role in the retail world.
MCS was a great help every step of the way. To secure the position at TJX I had two phone interviews. This is something I had no prior experience with, but my Career Recruitment Specialist provided me with great advice. They also helped me recognize the transferable skills I possessed that were applicable to the position at TJX, which helped me present myself as the ideal candidate.
The skills that were the most instrumental in securing the job were analytical and problem solving skills. Both of which I utilized and built upon heavily during my first work term at Freshman Services.
The advice I would give to students is to be thorough. Make sure you tailor both your resume and cover letter to the job description. To prepare for an interview extensively research the company and the position. This will help you think of potential questions that may be asked during the interview. And don’t forget MCS is always there to help you, regardless of how big or small your concern might be.”
