Interested in accounting? Get the inside scoop from Dalhousie Accounting alumni Adam Schwartz, who first gained experience in the accounting field through his co-op work terms at KPMG. Since graduating in 2006, Adam has worked for large companies across North America and opened his own accounting firm in 2013. Adam has extensive knowledge about the accounting industry and some great tips for students interested in pursuing an accounting career.
“I will be completely open and truthful – accounting is very challenging to learn and is not for everyone. But as you advance down the career path, your understanding of the common business language opens up a whole new light. You start seeing problems as fixable challenges, businesses as both individual components but also as a whole and you just understand numbers like others do not. It creates a skillset that almost assures you of respectable employment for the rest of your practicing life and teaches you how to quantify success. My only advice is that it will be a tough road to get there but at the end it is well worth it. Think of it as a return on an initial investment that you know will pay off. Then become an accountant.”
