Finding ways to grow your professional network and get work experience can be challenging for many students in today’s world. Liz Pomeroy is a fourth year Management student who found a creative and enjoyable way to do both of these things: volunteering! Through her volunteer experience, Liz opened the door to many great opportunities, including her internship. Here’s her story:
“My involvement in volunteering began when I volunteered as an administrative assistant for a small non-profit organization. In this role I gained many skills while helping people and all it took was a little time out of my day.
Volunteer experience also adds a lot to a resume. It shows you are willing to step out of your comfort zone to do something you are truly interested in without any monetary return. It demonstrates commitment and time management skills and can lead to strong references. Volunteering can also lead to job opportunities, in my case it led to an internship with the Canadian Mental Health Association Halifax Dartmouth.
For students interested in volunteering, find something you’re interested in – music, movies, sports, a cause, an industry etc. Decide how much time you are willing to invest and search for organizations or events that would be suitable. There are many volunteer opportunities out there.”
