Alex Lanteigne is a 4th year International Business student from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Alex completed all three of his co-op semesters with Environment Canada, taking on a different role each time. During his three work-terms with Environment Canada, Alex has worked as a Financial Services Assistant, a Junior Contracting Officer and a Procurement Support Officer.
“The group was great to work with, and I had the opportunity to process some very interesting invoices. Helicopters and a hot-air balloon, amongst others, come to mind. Many people associate the public sector with burdensome bureaucracy and red tape. In reality, these restrictive measures are there to keep government employees accountable to the Canadian public. Food for thought!
Without a doubt, working for Environment Canada was a very enriching opportunity. I was able to meet a number of managers and directors from many departments, and shook hands with a few ministers as well. If a student is interested in a work term within the public sector, I highly urge them to do so. That being said, if you find that you work better in the fast-paced, hectic, environment of the private sector, working for the government may not be for you. Try it out and see for yourself!”
