On March 27th, 2011, students from the School of Social Work took to the stage at Just Us cafe to show their talents while raising funds for a worthwhile community organization – Street Feat newspaper. Street Feat is the only street newspaper in Atlantic Canada and provides an opportunity for people who are experiencing poverty or homelessness to generate income by selling copies of the paper. It also acts as a venue to educate the public on issues of poverty in the community.
“Some of us wanted to provide an opportunity for students to share skills, talents and interests that we don’t often see in the classroom” said Linden Hardie, a member of the SSW Student Group Executive and organizer of the event. The program included a singing performance by Courtney Spencer, a tango dance number, a group sing-a-long of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and two theatrical readings. The event was a success, and the student organizing committee hopes to make it a yearly occurence.
