As we approach the start of a new academic term, I am always filled with enthusiasm.  I love the idea of fresh starts: the promises we make to try harder, study more, go to the gym, and be a better academic peer and colleague.

I’m filled with that same enthusiasm this September.  I’m excited to meet some of you in person, to hear about your aspirations and hopes, and to watch how our programs press you in unexpected ways and challenge you to rise to the best versions of yourselves.

But I want to temper that September message a little this year.  For all kinds of global and local reasons, it’s been a year of realizations and change; a year of challenges and new possibilities.  Maybe go a little easy on your expectations for yourselves and for others in the face of that.  September brings promise and hope and new commitments, but you don’t have to be perfect.  Find some time to drink coffee and to enjoy the changing colours of the leaves (if you are in Canada, at least!).

I always love hearing how things are going.  So, find me – whether in person or by email (kim.brooks@dal.ca) – and let me know.  Until that happens, embrace the start of a new semester and know that we are rooting for you.

September 1, 2020 Kim Brooks, Dean, Faculty of Management and Purdy Crawford Chair in Business Law, welcomed students to new year of academic excellence.  Dalhousie’s 2020-21 academic year has been different, with the majority of courses for Winter 2021 being offered online, with a limited number of courses with accreditation requirements, experiential learning components, or tutorial or lab components being delivered safely in-person.

Over the past months, Dean Brooks has been grateful to have heard regularly from students about their challenges and successes.  Like all of us in the Faculty of Management, we want the best possible experience for students.  Our staff and faculty have worked hard in this era to create an environment that welcomes exploration and discussion.

Welcome to a new year of academic excellence.  Whether you are a new or returning student, we look forward to your contribution within our community.  You will be joining other like-minded individuals who share our vision of inspiring transformative solutions for society.

In February 2020, our world changed with the Covid19 pandemic.  As a global community, we have come together to face this unprecedented disruption.  Dalhousie University  has responded by investing in our students and in our student experiences. We are working closely with our public health partners and are diligently monitoring the impact of the pandemic going forward.  As with the 2020 Spring/Summer terms, this Fall term will be predominantly online, with limited exceptions.  Our commitment to facilitate opportunities for our students is unwavering.  Our goal is to foster an environment of teaching and learning excellence, built on innovation, collaboration, and respect.

Dalhousie’s Faculty of Management has a unique approach to education. We integrate four disciplines which encourages and promotes knowledge exchange: the Rowe School of Business, the School of Information Management, the School of Public Administration and the School for Resources and Environmental Studies.  We believe that offering transformative solutions demands all of our students to step beyond conventional boundaries.

CEGE Connection outreach modality connects our students, alumni, and stakeholders. These past four years, graduates, students, and professors have discussed themes ranging from virtual teams, and information management to scholarship and deeper learning. This demonstrates a values-based approach to management education and research.

Thank you to our engaged alumni. You make us proud. As the leaders and managers in the business sector, public sector, and civil society, your influence within a complex global environment has been extraordinary.

Dalhousie Faculty of Management’s incoming dean, Kim Brooks is excited to connect with alumni and friends across the country.   In a recent virtual interview with CEGE Connection, Kim shared her thoughts on embracing a new adventure and her plans for the coming year.

Tell us a little about yourself: 

I was born in Saskatchewan and I have lived in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.  If you track back a couple of generations, one strand of my family came from Freeport, Nova Scotia.  The great thing about that is that no matter who I meet from Canada, I usually have some connection to where they live!

I went to University of Toronto for my undergraduate degree, where I had a double major in English and Economics.  From there, I studied law at UBC and then completed a Masters in Taxation at Osgoode (York University).  I practiced tax law for a while in Toronto at Stikeman Elliott.  But I missed the varied discussions that you find at the University – I love talking to people about everything from astronomy to psychology to engineering.

What attached you to the FoM Deanship position?

I love the Faculty’s mandate to inspire solutions.  When you think about the function of a Faculty of Management in the University, no other Faculty has quite that same mandate – we take ideas from inspiration to realization.  That is our talent set and intellectual project.  It is exciting to be in a place that is so actively engaged in making the world a better place one organizational or individual decision at a time.

What are your goals and vision for the faculty?

I do not think I personally have any goals or vision: I think our project is to work together to elevate our game.  We have this fantastic vision already – where will it take us in the next three to five years?

Top priority over the next year?

Survival?  No!  More seriously, I think we have lots of experience with online teaching and learning in our Faculty, so we are so much more prepared for this moment than lots of other institutions.  A major priority internally is to support colleagues as we try to make this year great for students in the face of some substantial challenges.  But I also think we have room to move strategically as a Faculty.  I would like us to be the faculty of choice for students, staff, faculty members, policy makers, organizations and communities who want to generate real world solutions.

What message would you like to convey to students starting their academic career with Dal’s FoM?

This year is going to be different: see if there are differences that are appealing to you.  Think about how you learn and whether there are ways that virtual and online options might enable you to structure your life in ways that you would not have expected.  Do not be reluctant to reach out to your profs and fellow students and build community.  We are here to support you and make your time at Dal extraordinary.
