CEGE Connection: Celebrating our Fourth Anniversary

On November 1, 2020, CEGE Connection celebrates our fourth anniversary of bringing together a virtual community that thrives on the exchange of knowledge and experiences.  The momentum continues as we head into our fifth year of existence. Over the past four years, CEGE Connection launched dialogues that served as catalysts for deeper conversations.  A special thanks to our alumni community for engaging and sharing their insights.

There are many more discussions waiting for us in the upcoming year.  We enjoy sharing stories of graduates. We also want to have repeat contributors to discuss current thoughts regarding leadership, communication, governance, and information management. Have you ever been involved in a project or endeavour that came from an idea that arrives spontaneously and impromptu?  Unplanned, with the added advantage of optimum timing? CEGE Connection is an outcome of such an occurrence.  March 2016, Dr. Martine Durier-Copp facilitated a Dalhousie presentation to potential MBA students at the Delta Hotel, Vancouver.  This session provided an opportunity for graduates of the CEGE MBA program to share their experiences and encourage others to join a robust academic program.  There is a singular connection that exists with CEGE graduates, whether they are freshly minted 2019 graduates or whether they completed their MBA in the early days of the program.

After the presentation, Martine and I headed out into the chilly Vancouver weather.  Our conversation was stopped mid-stride when Mr. Peanut and his representative offered us a rose, a bag of peanuts and an opportunity to discuss marketing strategies, product placement, delivery systems and branding. And that was the genesis of CEGE Connection.  For in that short meeting, Martine and I came away with the same thought that we need to have meaningful discussions, even with Mr. Peanut.  Martine looked at me and said, “Wouldn’t it be interesting if the graduates had a forum to dialogue and reconnect?”

So here we are, four years later. Martine’s vision has been realized.  CEGE Connection has become and continues to be a vibrant place to share experiences and explore new ideas.  It has become an evolving narrative of what’s next, the next chapter, and the ongoing adventures of the CEGE family.

Today, we are celebrating Martine’s next chapter  Martine has accepted an appointment as Dean at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University.  In a recent announcement, Dr. Vivian Howard, Associate Professor, Interim Dean, Associate Vice-President (Academic) shared her thoughts on Martine’s Legacy.

Martine joined the Faculty of Management as an adjunct professor in the School of Public Administration in 1996, following a career in public service, in Ottawa, Toronto,  Washington and Halifax.  Since 2010, Martine has been Director of the Faculty of Management’s Centre for Executive and Graduate Education (CEGE, formerly CFAME), and under her leadership our Faculty has launched new programs and certificates, both credit and non-credit, and has seen enrolments grow.  She directed several projects in Cuba, and our current projects with the Government of Nunavut. Martine’s career has consistently demonstrated her commitment to lifelong personal and professional growth.

In addition to her role managing the CEGE office, Martine has a strong commitment to music and dance and performs with flamenco company, Flamenco en Rouge.  Her new role at NSCAD will give her an opportunity to combine her interest in post-secondary educational administration with her passion for the visual and performing arts.  While we will all miss Martine’s energy and positivity, there is no doubt that this is a unique opportunity for her to move into a stimulating new role and to take on new challenges.

Martine, you will be missed. From all of us at  the Centre for Executive and Graduate Education, congratulations on your appointment as Dean at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University.  We are grateful for your encouragement and dedication to our CEGE family and extended community over the years.  Your enthusiasm for life, dedication to excellence and commitment to creativity continues to inspire us all.

January 1, 2019 marks the beginning of a New Year that holds the realization of fresh challenges and opportunities, celebrations and milestones. Whether or not you entertain making New Year’s resolutions, there is a reflective moment that accompanies the transition from one year to another.  It is a milestone that allows us to examine the passage of time and look forward to what comes next.  Whatever that may be, our efforts and energies are focused on adding to the breadth and depth of knowledge and experience.  In so doing, we are active participants in creating positive outcomes, now and for future generations.

As we bid farewell to the Year 2018, the words of T.S. Eliot remind us that with endings there are beginnings that await our voice, our contribution. Welcome to 2019 and the many conversations that are waiting for us in the coming months.

Sarah Horrocks: Opportunities and Lasting Friendships

In a recent virtual interview, Sarah joined CEGE Connection in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the MIM program.

Sarah Horrocks:

I was one of the first recipients of the MIM degree from Dalhousie. Being part of the inaugural cohort of students meant being grouped together for every course, which led to many lasting friendships that continue to this day. The MIM program opened a new way of thinking about how to organize documents and materials for the preservation and continuity of business knowledge and information assets.

While I was studying for the degree, I was also working in two different office environments. I found that every aspect of what I was learning was immediately applicable to my work in both of those positions. I developed a deeper understanding of some of the legal underpinnings of information management and privacy legislation and was able to correct several policies that had fallen into non-compliance. I created a document retention/disposition policy and instituted file naming conventions for ease of document retrieval that exist to this day. I devoted my final capstone project towards facilitating communication across the various, remotely-located, offices in which I dealt with on a regular basis.  It is gratifying to know that many of the findings contained in my capstone presentation continue to greatly benefit the organization.

Thanks to the flexible MIM blended online model, I was able to complete my degree, despite facing many time constraints. It was not unusual for me to be doing homework during my kids’ football games, paddling practices, even during my son’s bagpipe lessons (THAT was a challenge!).  The faculty were extremely helpful in devising options for working around the occasional life events that caused interruptions in studies, such as skyping in to intensives or offering independent studies. Having the course material available online meant you were able to access it at your convenience from any location.  The moderated online discussions ensured you were able to exchange your ideas with colleagues and faculty to better understand the material. The “in person” intensive sessions were a two-day whirlwind of knowledge exchange, presentations, papers and most importantly, networking. We worked incredibly hard.  Even so, being together as a group made the experience extremely rewarding.

I would (and often do) encourage others to explore this program because there is so much to learn that is interesting and immediately applicable to any organization. In fact, my husband, a career army man, received his MIM degree in 2017. The variety of specialized electives available allow the degree to be tailored to fit a variety of interests. I am continually excited to uncover where my MIM knowledge can next be applied. This fall, after 13 years with the same organization, I am dusting off my CV and embarking on a job search, with my MIM designation at the top of my list of qualifications. I am ever eager to put my hard-earned degree to good use!

The Centre for Executive and Graduate Education is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Master of Information Management (MIM) program.  The first of its kind in Canada, MIM builds on an individual’s existing knowledge and experience to develop the skills and best practices in critical information, risk and change management that respond to our ever-changing dynamic work environment.

The MIM is a part-time program delivered primarily online, complemented by onsite intensives.  Award-winning teachers, who possess a broad experience in e-learning, research and consulting, create an environment that fosters meaningful learning. The long-term success and strength of the MIM program is found in the collaborative approach that is formed within the cohorts over the duration of the MIM journey.

CEGE Connection reached out to the first cohort of the MIM program for their thoughts on how the MIM program influenced their lives.

Dr. Sandra Toze introduced me to Jennifer Woods at the 2018 ARMA Conference held in Vancouver this past spring. Over lunch, Jennifer highlighted how technology is transforming the way information is managed for the betterment of society.  Today, she looks back on how the MIM degree provided a pathway to greater career opportunities.

Jennifer Woods:

I was very fortunate to be part of the first cohort of the Dalhousie Master of Information Management (MIM) program, and I loved it!

At the time, I was a manager in the federal government, and I believed my career would benefit from furthering my education.  The mid-career professionals’ approach to the curriculum was brilliant.  It not only helped me apply my learning to solve practical issues at the office, and made the learning more meaningful and interesting, but it also provided a great reason for my employer to invest in my tuition.

Within two years of graduating, I successfully advanced my career and became the director of the government-wide program rolling out the standard document and records management solution known as GCdocs.  It is my dream job, and I honestly don’t think I would have achieved this goal without the Master of Information Management (MIM).

One of the best things about the program is going to Halifax for the onsite intensives, doing things like boat tours, eating at the Split Crow and touring the Keith’s Brewery.  It is such a great city, now one of my favorite places to visit.  And I’m so thankful for the great relationships I gained with my cohorts, many of whom stay in touch ten years later.

This year, the Class of 2018 will walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and step onto the world’s stage.   Graduations mark the ending of a demanding academic journey and signal the beginning of an adventure that awaits.  It is a time of celebration and anticipation, of farewells and of new plans.

The Class of 2018 has the profound honour of being the class that welcomes Dalhousie University’s third century.

In January 2018, I received an e-mail from Joyline Makani who shared a video that featured  the graduating class of 1931.

Dianne Landry, one of the Archives staff, discovered a 16mm film of the 1931 Convocation while doing some shifting of the collection.  We took the original film and sent it to our film preservation service provider, Media Preserve to transfer the film to digital. The digital files just came back from Media Preserve and Creighton Barrett, the Archives’ Digital Archivist has put the file up on our Youtube channel.  This 16 mm film was shot by R. Gordon Harris, the “Life Secretary” of the Class of 1931.

1931 marked the opening of the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and the year that the Statute of Westminster went into effect, giving Canada full independence in national and international affairs.  Those born in 1931 included Mordecai Richler, author, screenwriter and essayist, William Shatner of Star Trek fame and Alice Munro, writer and marvelous storyteller.

This archival treasure captures all the festivity and excitement of the Class of 1931. There is an eagerness to take on new challenges, a willingness to embrace life with exuberance and a hint of audacity.  This was the generation that would experience the economics of the 1930’s, WWII, and the massive technological advances that sent us into space.  Their voices may no longer be with us, but their hopes and efforts are embedded in the fabric of our nation, and in the spirit of a new generation ready to make their voices heard.

From all of us at CEGE Connection, congratulations to the Class of 2018.  We know that whatever you do, you will be remarkable.
