Spring is finally here, and we are all looking forward to the warmer weather. It’s hard to believe the end of another academic year is quickly approaching and exams are already underway for some. Wishing you all the best of luck.
It is with great joy that I congratulate the class of 2023 on taking the next steps in their future careers as physicians. Match Day took place on March 22, and I am pleased to say we had another successful residency match. Of note, this year we had 76 Dalhousie grads match to a Dalhousie residency position – our highest number of grads since this data has been tracked.
At the same time, Match Day can be very difficult day for those who went through the first iteration unmatched. Student Affairs will work with those students to look at options and help prepare them for the second iteration of matches. To the students who may not have received the news they were hoping for, we are thinking of you and wishing you all the best through this process.
As you many of you are aware, the Tupper Building sustained extensive damage following an extreme weather event on February 4, 2023. Restoration efforts have been ongoing since that time, which has resulted in disruptions to the research community, learners, and staff.
I understand this has been a particularly challenging time for those that have been affected, and that many of you have questions. A town hall to address health and safety concerns and to outline our plan moving forward will be held on April 12, 2023, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Login information for this town hall can be found below.
My sincere thanks to all those involved as we work to accommodate those displaced. I would also like to thank Dr. Eileen Denovan-Wright, and both the Dalhousie University and the Faculty of Medicine Facilities Management teams, who have provided ongoing support to ensure that critical research can continue.
Below you will read about other exciting activities and recognitions related to the Faculty of Medicine. I wish everyone all the best, and as always, am pleased to receive your feedback about how the Faculty of Medicine can serve you better.
Kindest regards,
Dr. David Anderson

Dalhousie University research team receives Canadian Cancer Society Breakthrough Grant
Congratulations to Dr. Robin Urquhart, an associate professor in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, and her colleagues, including Dr. Graham Dellaire, who have received $5 million in funding from the Canadian Cancer Society.
Dr. Urquhart and a team of Dalhousie researchers are working to make sure environmental factors are considered when assessing a person’s risk of lung cancer. They will use state-of-the-art technology and patient experience to identify biological markers of risk related to arsenic, radon and air pollution. They will also develop a monitoring system for air pollution to better understand how it affects our cells and elevates cancer risk.
Well done!

Tupper Building Update
We have been advised by Facilities Management that to move forward with the restoration work of the Tupper Building, all work will need to follow precautionary processes for asbestos abatement. Be assured that any asbestos is currently in a safe state in the walls and that the building and the air quality inside the building has been, and will continue to be safe. Unfortunately, as this abatement work takes place, researchers and staff in the affected areas will experience significant disruptions while the asbestos is safely removed.
Our priority now is to continue to support the research community, and to ensure the health and safety of the workers who have been tirelessly working to restore the building. If you have questions or concerns regarding this process, please join us on April 12, 2023, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for a town hall discussion.
Dal neurosurgery residency attains gender parity
I’m proud to say a program here in the Faculty of Medicine is one of the first in the country to achieve gender parity among trainees.
The Division of Neurosurgery’s six-year postgraduate training program, one of the most competitive programs for residents, has achieved an equal distribution of males and females among learners. In fact, with six of the 11 trainees in the program identifying as female, they have actually surpassed it.

New Brunswick researchers find flaw in heart failure diagnostic among women
Researchers at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick in Saint John have discovered a flaw in how we look at heart failure among women. Dr. Thomas Pulinilkunnil and a team of researchers believe that it comes from inefficient pumping of the left ventricle. Euphoria! 2023: Supporting Camp Triumph
EUPHORIA! was back for its 53rd year at the Rebecca Cohn auditorium on February 18, 2023. This year, over $14,000 was raised for Camp Triumph, a PEI-based charity that provides opportunities for children and youth affected by chronic illness or disability to attend camp experiences on the island.
The audience was treated to creative retellings of classic movies and musicals, all with a med school spin. The Class of 2026 sang their way through new school jitters with the help of High School Musical tracks. The Class of 2025 worked through ‘imposter syndrome’ in a Med 2 version of The Wiz. The struggle to find a med specialty fit perfectly into the Class of 2024’s version of Mean Girls while the Class of 2023 battled through their own Mission Impossible – CaRMS.
Judges praised each performance but ultimately declared the Class of 2023 the winners based on their elaborate storytelling and fundraising success. Congratulations and well done to all participants!
