Festival Report by Denisha
Attending the FIN: Atlantic International Film Festival was a wonderful experience. I was fortunate enough to experience the outstanding documentary on Candice Vadala, aka Candida Royalle, a woman who went from acting in erotic films to starting her own adult film company named Femme, with which she began to produce so-called feminist porn: adult films which focus on the women and the female body, putting more emphasis on the woman’s voice and not displaying the stereotypical controlling male.
Although this work was what she is most known for, the documentary did not solely focus on this time of her life. The audience was able to learn about her childhood and upbringing, and the challenges she faced growing up without her mother. The 81-minute documentary follows her on her journey to learning more details about her birth mother in the present while guiding us through her entire life.
The documentary was extremely raw and despite the fact that I have never heard of Candice before, this experience made me feel as though I got to her know her on a very deep, personal level. It included comedic elements as well as truly touching moments. Candice Vadala possesses such a bold and at the same time gentle personality; I could’ve listened to her for hours.
