The United Way representatives on the Agricultural Campus were recently awarded 3^rd place in Colchester County for United Way Workplace Contributions. The Agricultural Campus is always a huge UW supporter and they are already working on some exciting ideas for this year’s campaign!

Dalhousie’s United Way Steering Committee would like to thank the Dalhousie community for their outstanding support. Through casual days, bake sales, 50/50 ticket sales, donations, and more, together we raised $157,587.08 to fight poverty-related issues in our communities. Thank you, Dalhousie!

This week, we awarded the top prizes to the workplace challenge winners. Congratulations to the Faculty of Medicine who once again took home the top spot for the most money raised. The President’s Office and Human Resources tied in the highest participation category. Each of these winners will get to spend some time with everyone’s favourite lawn ornament turned trophy, Scrubs the Turtle. Congratulations, all!

Congratulations to David Packer of the College of Continuing Education — he was winner of the United Way 50/50 prize of $1,416.87.  

We would like to thank David for his kind and generous gesture of donating back half of his winnings to the United Way.

This is such a cool event that was held on the Carleton Campus, with proceeds going to the United Way!

The formal part of the United Way campaign wrapped up on November 2, and those that got their donations in on time were entered into a draw for some seriously fabulous prizes donated from various departments and units across campus. Say congrats to these lucky Dalhousie United Way donors who not only contributed to a great cause, but also won themselves some excellent prizes in the process!

Thank you to all our donors and to those departments who donated such wonderful incentive prizes. If you didn’t yet donate, it’s not too late! We’re still working on reaching our $200K for 200 years goal. With your help, we can make it happen.

There’s something about a certain bow-tied turtle that transforms the usually mild-mannered faculties and departments at Dalhousie into a competitive bunch. The United Way turtle, known as Scrubs, is the icon of Dal’s annual United Way fundraiser.

Scrubs is the reward for the unit with the greatest participation in the campaign and for the unit that raises the greatest amount overall for the United Way. Each unit gets to host the turtle for six months. In addition to hosting the turtle, the two winning units also receive a prize of $500 each to support student activities of their choosing.

“Scrubs encourages the units to challenge each other, which results in more money raised for the United Way. A few fun rivalries have developed because everyone wants to host the United Way turtle,” said Christina MacNeil, co-chair of the Dalhousie United Way steering committee.

Scrubs even has his own Twitter account, sharing news and updates about Dal’s United Way campaign.

“Scrubs is a great motivator,” said Peter Dykhuis, co-chair of the Dalhousie United Way steering committee. “Somehow, this humble little concrete lawn ornament has become a trophy that has captured Dal’s imagination all in the name of a good cause.”

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Lee in Dentistry, for winning the sixth early bird prize of this year’s United Way campaign, a parking pass.

Thanks to Dr. Lee for getting his United Way donation in early, and to Dalhousie Security for donating an awesome prize.

Congratulations to Gena Walsh of the College of Continuing Education, the was winner of this United Way 50/50 prize of $1,349!

The Ancillary Services department joined with colleagues from across campus on Nov. 6 for the department’s annual bake sale auction in support of United Way. The bake sale has become an important annual tradition for Ancillary Services, taking place in some capacity for almost two decades and raising thousands of dollars along the way.

Staff spent the weekend baking cakes, cookies and squares to auction off over a pay-by-donation lunch, generously provided by Dalhousie Food Services. Volunteers collected lunch donations, sold 50/50 tickets, and acted as the auctioneer as attendees outbid each other for a variety of delicious baked goods.

Not only was the live auction a success, a number of silent auction items were donated by Dalhousie Food Services, the Dalhousie Bookstore and the Arts Centre. Winners walked away with some fantastic prizes and a jump start on their holiday baking! In total, $1,010 was raised for United Way.

A huge thank you to all who came out, had lunch, baked, bid and made donations – your support is greatly appreciated. We hope to see you again next year! 

Congratulations to Coleen Branscombe in the Office of the Vice President Research, for winning the fifth early bird prize of this year’s United Way campaign, a single registration to the May 29-31, 2018 CAUCE Conference in Halifax, donated by the College of Continuing Education.

Thanks to Coleen for getting her United Way donation in early, and to the College of Continuing Education for donating an awesome prize.
