Attendees at DALVision 2020 heard and contributed divergent views about assessing students’ learning, as well as assessing teaching. Concerning the former, the Chronicle of Higher Education blog recently published an informed rant asking why we continue with the very wide use of term papers: http://chronicle.com/blogs/conversation/2012/11/20/lets-kill-the-term-paper/
It is an interesting question, with no single answer, as context—subject matter, course level, learning goals, etc.—is so important. Rants are designed to capture attention. The CHE rant is worthy of some reflection, and the topic relates to Donna Rogers earlier posting here about rethinking our syllabi. Join the conversation!
