Hey Tiger fans!
The women’s hockey team is back in action! We just finished a very busy exhibition schedule with 6 games in 8 days; we have had mixed results as our head coach, Sean Fraser, and assistant coach, Kerry Boyle, are still mixing things up before the actual season starts. On Saturday, September 24, we played the AUS defending champions, St. FX, at home and had a tough 7-1 loss. St. FX dominated on the power play and penalty kill, and capitalized on our turnovers. We had several scoring chances, but Jocelyn Leblanc scored the only goal in the first period. Despite the momentum from Jocelyn’s goal, the Tigers did not put the puck in the back of the net, resulting in a 7-1 loss.
On Sunday, September 25th, we traveled to St. FX for redemption but unfortunately we fell short again with a 10-1 loss. Brooklyn Winch scored a beautiful goal in the first period when she took a slap shot at the offensive blue line and found the mesh. Once again, X’s stellar power play was our biggest problem as they scored 7 power play goals. We are looking forward to playing X again on October 14 so we can redeem ourselves!
On a more positive note, we played SMU on Tuesday, September 27th and had a fantastic 8-1 win. Jocelyn Leblanc scored 3 goals, and Jenna Currie (a former SMU Huskie), Cassie Banfield, Liz Matheson, Rebecca Smyth, and Sarah Robichaud all added goals to the scoreboard as well. Robichaud’s goal was her first of many as a Dalhousie Tiger and we were all very happy for her!
This past weekend we were in Moncton for the annual exhibition tournament and ended up 3rd place overall with 6 teams competing. On Friday we played UPEI and won 2-1; UPEI came out flying with such a strong forecheck that made it very difficult for us to generate offense and quality scoring chances. Robyn Nicholson and Jocelyn Leblanc scored in the first and second period, respectively, but UPEI scored with 8 minutes left in the third period to make it a 2-1 game. The Tigers played stellar defense in the third period and held the one goal lead over UPEI. Brittany McMacken, our first year goaltender, played an exceptional game as UPEI had more shots on net than we did.
On Saturday we played Mt.A and lost 5-3. We knew going into that game that Mt.A was a tough team to beat because they are very opportunistic and have lots of speed and tenacity. We didn’t play to our potential and lost battles all over the ice; we created turnovers and they capitalized on our mistakes. They had an early lead, but Sarah Robichaud, Rebecca Smyth, and Jocelyn Leblanc scored a goal each to make the game 4-3 in the third period. One breakdown in the neutral zone resulted in their 5th and final goal, and we settled with a 5-3 loss.
On Sunday we were very excited to hear that we would be playing Mt.A for the second time in the 3rd/4th place game. We knew we had to fix the mistakes we made the game before and we wanted to redeem ourselves. The Tigers came out flying, generating scoring chances within the first few minutes of the game and beating Mt.A to pucks all over the ice. Rachel Cox scored the first goal by tipping Brook Winch‘s slap shot from the point; Sarah Robichaud was given a penalty shot and made scoring look effortless; Meg O’Neill scored a goal on the powerplay, and Jocelyn Leblanc scored a goal to make the game 4-2!
We have this Thanksgiving weekend off before we play St. FX next Friday in Antigonish. Wish us luck!!
