Our friends at the Deanery Project have a lot going on this summer! Take a look at the events that they have planned!
Seed-to-Soup Initiative
Join the Deanery Seed-to-Soup challenge to support more food gardens on the Eastern Shore! Our goal is to get 20 teams of neighbours, co-workers, youth, club members, friends or families to combine their gardening space and skills to produce vegetables then make soup or preserves to share with groups or families chosen by team members. Teams will combine resources so you don’t need a lot of space to participate – you can grow a single plant in a container.
Are you just getting your garden started? It’s not too late to get involved and we can help. We have a variety of seeds like carrots, kale, beans and radishes that you still have time to grow. We also have seedlings for tomato, squash, pepper and more. Do you already have crops started? Consider dedicating some to Seed to Soup.In addition to gardeners and gardening space we are looking for people who want to help harvest and/or prepare vegetables for sharing through the winter. We invite you to get a group together and to record your journey through journals, pictures and/or videos. We can help connect people and support your garden with resources related to food, food production and health, gardening skills, recipes, ways to record your journey and more. We can also help you decide what to plant, how to maintain and harvest, where you want your soups to go, and how you will celebrate and share your harvest. If you would like to participate, or learn more about Seed to Soup, contact Mary Elizabeth at 902-845-1888 or by email at DeaneryS2S@gmail.com.
Renewable Energy Tour
If you’re considering incorporating renewables into your home, community facility or business, join us on a Renewables Tour of the Eastern Shore! Beginning in Three Fathom Harbour the morning of Sunday, July 8th, we will travel to Lower Ship Harbour, visiting three residences and possibly two community facilities along the way. Some highlights of the tour include off-grid, hybrid (wind and photo voltaic) systems, a bidirectional photo voltaic system and Electric Vehicle chargers. Contact us at 902-845-1888 or thedeaneryproject.com for more info or to register for the tour.
“ENERGIZE Yourself” Kids Day Camps
ENERGIZE yourself this summer at the Deanery Project! Camps are open to everyone between 8-12 years old. Registration can be either weekly ($135) or daily ($35). All supplies included, some snacks provided. The theme of our camps is energy. We will be exploring energy through hands-on experiential approaches and play. Themes include biking, solar & wind energies, art and food! Registration is now open. Please reach out with any questions to kgeorgejim@gmail.com or call the Deanery Project at 902-845-1888.
The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), a transnational hub for ocean research, is gearing up for its inaugural conference in St. John’s, NL from Oct. 9 to 12. The event provides an excellent opportunity to hear from researchers who will use presentations and displays to identify not just what their science will achieve, but how it will benefit our ocean, society and economy. Check out the full program here ….
Thanks to OFI’s partners, the conference is very affordable with early bird registration fees generating significant value. OFI has negotiated hotel discounts and reduced fees at Canada’s largest airlines.
Early bird registration closes July 27, so act now!
