Seacology by Kayak is gearing up for our sixth season this year and we have some exciting opportunities open for new naturalists to lead these informal, fun, and educational tours. Seacology By Kayak is a program that connects local marine experts and researchers with interested public participants to get everyone out on the water and engaging with the marine environment.
Our naturalists also learn from leading these tours. As you may know, giving informal talks on scientific topics can be challenging! Seacology is fun and rewarding and provides a great networking with other regional marine professionals and enthusiasts.
Tour topics in the past have included marine ecology, fisheries biology, oceanography, conservation biology, coastal geology, and edible marine life. This year, we are hoping to broaden the scope of these Seacology tours to also include Mi’kmaw traditional knowledge, mariner folklore and history, and anthropology.
How: To reserve your tour time please send the following in an email to email@example.com:
- Preferred dates and tides
- Your tour topic (general)
- Two to three of your main take home points (bullet form preferred)
- Your Twitter or Instagram handle(s) (if applicable)
Does your work or research focus on the marine environment in some capacity? Lead a tour on your marine-related topic of choice! If this is your first time doing anything like this, we have some great tools that you might find useful to help you organize your talk.
Tour locations will vary within the coastal islands and channels accessible from East Coast Outfitters in Lower Prospect, NS. Naturalists will choose topics ahead of time, in order to coordinate with guides and select tour locations.
East Coast Outfitters, 2017 Lower Prospect Rd. Nova Scotia (www.eastcoastoutfitters.com)
6:00*-8:00 pm, every Tuesday starting June 6, to September (weather permitting)
*Plan to arrive half an hour before the tour to meet with the guide to discuss routes
We need one naturalist per week. You can choose more than one date and can repeat topics. If you require transportation out to East Coast Outfitters, chances are high that you can catch a ride with one of the coordinators.
Professors, graduate students, senior undergraduate students and local experts. If you’ve never lead a public talk, think of this as a fantastic learning opportunity to hone your skills.
