Do you know what an awesome program, like Medical Sciences, needs? The answer is an awesome society! That’s why we Medical Sciences students took the initiative to form our very own society. In fact, by October our society was ratified and in full motion. The society’s purpose is to enrich the academic experience of the Medical Sciences Students- which is why everyone should join! Within the society there are many positions including an executive council (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and representatives), program representatives, and many more.
I recently took time to ask Adele Orovec (President) and Prathana Nathan (Vice President) some general questions about the society, and what members we can look forward to in the future!
Here is the interview:
Question: What is the main purpose of the society?
Answer: The purpose of the Society is to enrich the academic experience of Medical Sciences students by functioning as a collective voice for the program’s members. The Medical Sciences Society will make collective decisions regarding Medical Sciences students’ desires and goals for the Medical Sciences program. – Prathana Nathan
Q: What has the society accomplished so far?
A: Our previous events include wing nights, general meetings, a Christmas party and a bake sale fundraiser to raise money for the society’s charity: the QEll Health Sciences center. – Adele Orovec
Q: What can we look forward to in the remaining weeks of this semester?
A: Med Sciers can look forward to the annual general meeting where elections for next year will be held, an end of the year gala, and we hope to have another fundraiser for our charity! – Prathana Nathan
Q: How can people become more involved with the society?
A: Come to the AGM and general meetings! This is the best way to get involved. Any Med Sci student can run for a position on the society at our elections. You can provide suggestion to the society on any events or regarding any concerns you may have by contacting an executive member or by email at email@example.com. – Prathana Nathan
Q: What changes do you see coming for the society next year? How do you think the dynamic of another group of Med Sci students will change the society?
A: We hope to add more committees to the society, and connect with the first year students coming next year. We also hope to host more fundraisers and more events. Since there will be many new students coming in, there will be a diverse range of personalities that we think will enrich the society and the program itself. – Adele Orovec
It looks like the Medical Science’s Society has come a long way since the beginning of fall term! And it sounds like we can expect great things from the society in the future. So, if you are already a member be sure to come to the AGM and you could also run for a position on the executive council (if you want to get more involved), and if you are not a member come on out to the AGM and find out more about the society (I’m sure you will love it)!
