GRADUATE POSITION IN DNA REPAIR/CANCER BIOLOGY
AT DALHOUSIE UNIVERISTY
PROJECT TITLE: To study the role of ubiquitin-like proteins in DNA repair
START DATE: Sept. 2016
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
DNA damage has the potential to create mutations in our genes that increase an individual’s chances of developing cancer. Therefore, a key question in cancer biology is how the cell detects and repairs DNA damage? Our laboratory at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, studies nuclear structure and function in vertebrates with a focus on DNA repair mechanisms and their role in tumour suppression. Research projects are available for an M.Sc. or Ph.D. candidate to study how ubiquitin-like modifiers regulate DNA repair in mammalian cells and in the zebrafish. More information on the Dellaire laboratory and on-going projects can be obtained from our website: dellairelab.medicine.dal.ca
FUNDING: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) (2015-2020)
SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED:
• mammalian tissue culture
• cell transfection and DNA damage assays
• bacterial protein expression and yeast-two hybrid assays
• protein-protein interaction assays
• multiplex mass spectrometry analysis of protein expression and modification
• spinning-disk and light-sheet live-cell microscopy
• zebrafish animal handling, genetic manipulation, and microinjection
• CRISPR-mediated genome engineering
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for this position, please provide the following
1) Your most recent transcripts (unofficial),
2) Your CV, including at least 2 academic/research references
3) A brief statement describing your research interests and career goals
Preference will be given to Canadian (or landed immigrant) students with previous research experience and a GPA of 3.7/4.0 or higher who would be eligible for Alexander Graham Bell or Vanier NSERC studentship funding.
