Orientation is how we welcome all incoming students to campus. It doesn’t matter if you’re straight from high school, a transfer student, international student, or mature student. Everyone is welcome! Here are 5 things you need to know about Orientation at Dal AC.
1. It’s a chance to make friends
Everyone arriving on campus is as new as you (except for Orientation leaders), so this is a great time to make new friends and connect with the O-Leaders. The O-Leaders have both campus knowledge and experience and are here to guide and motivate you. Take the opportunity to make great friends before classes kick into full force.
2. Get familiar with campus services and learn to get involved
We have tailored sessions for you to get to know the buildings around campus, and understand the services and supports offered and how you can access them. Orientation provides the best opportunity to discover where your classes will be before the semester begins! The Club & Services Fair is a great way to find out how you can get involved on campus through clubs, sports teams, or volunteering opportunities.
3. Settle into your new home
Students living on campus can begin moving in on the morning of August 31. This should give you plenty of time to unpack, make your bed, and start decorating your room. There are information sessions where you can get your questions about residence answered and take a mini-tour of the facilities available in your residence. You’ll attend your first house meeting during Orientation where you’ll be introduced to your RA team and learn about house rules. House meetings are available to off-campus students too!
International students can start moving in on August 29, providing a few extra days to get over jet lag!
4. You’ll be prepared for classes
We’ll teach you about our lingo and how to navigate around the different platforms we use. Unsure of the differences between myDal, Dalonline, and Brightspace? Check them out here. Orientation focuses on the university environment and terms that you’ll need to wrap your head around. Orientation will also provide you with all of the important dates you need to know about for the academic year!
Orientation is also a great time to pick up your textbooks and get some Dal swag while you are at it!
5. Fun and prizes
Orientation wouldn’t be the same if it was just information sessions without any fun. Fear not, we didn’t leave out the fun or the freebies! We have activities lined up from icebreakers to the classic bubble barn and infamous country fair. Every student attending Orientation will receive a shirt, water bottle, and a bag of goodies. There will be door prizes at random sessions so be sure to attend them all. You’ll also receive tickets for participating in each session which you can use towards the country fair to win fabulous prizes!
Orientation is a mix of fun, information, and academics, and is a great opportunity to make new friends and get to know your new home. What are you waiting for?
