Community Day on Dalhousie’s Agricultural Campus is right around the corner! This year our doors are open to you to come and explore our beautiful campus on Thursday, July 19, 2019. The day is designed for the community to learn about what we do on campus and how we contribute to feeding and protecting our world. If you’re a new incoming student this year and are able to come by, we have some highlights for you to help you start the year off right.
1. Meet with a member of the Student Success Team
Haven’t picked your courses? Need help with course selection and registration? Or do you want to learn more about accommodations and access support? This is the time to get started! Come meet with a member of the Student Success Team over at the Dairy Building. The Student Success Centre is open throughout the day for appointments or just drop in.
2. Visit the farm facility
Have you ever wondered how big a cow is? Or how fluffy a sheep can get? The Agricultural Campus is home to a large-scale, fully operational farm. If you’re entering an animal-based program, chances are you’ll have a class at the farm. So why not get first dibs on the experience? Come see the cows and the sheep, and maybe a few baby animals.
3. Learn about international opportunities
The International Office is the hot spot for anything dealing with studying abroad. They’ll tell you all about global education opportunities outside of Canada—field trips, international courses, internships, and exchange and research opportunities. Some internships and courses (worth course credits) abroad include the ATTSVE Project in Ethiopia, African Wildlife Ecology in South Africa, and the CARICOM Education for Employment in the Caribbean! Concerned about the costs? There’s various funding available to support your travel. All you’ve got to do is drop by and explore your options.
4. Take a residence tour
Visit your future room! The Residence team will show you what a typical room in residence looks like. You’ll visit the washrooms, showers, and all common spaces in residence. You’ll learn all about living in residence, including support and programs available to you. Residence tours are a great opportunity to plan the layout and decorations of your future room!
5. Get familiar with campus
Every first-year student’s nightmare is walking into a classroom and settling down as class starts only to find that you’re in the wrong classroom and need a plan to escape! So why not get familiar with the campus on Community Day? All of our buildings are open with different activities going on at each location. You might even spot some of your future professors at different stations.
6. Set up your health record at Health Services
Health Services provide services for a range of mental and physical health issues. Located in the Dairy Building, it assists with cold & flu assessments, sexual health counselling, stress management counselling, select immunizations, and much more. Everything is confidential, including nursing assessments and referral services for all students, regardless if you live on or off campus. These services are covered under the DSU Health & Dental plan or under private insurance. You can come set up your health record with Health Services on Community Day so you’ll already be in the system if you do happen to get sick during the school year. You’ll need to set it up in September otherwise, so why not do it now?
Once your list has been checked off, enjoy the rest of Community Day with wagon rides and ice cream treats. There’s so much more to explore and partake on our campus so make the most out of your time!
