Do you know what the secret is to having an amazing university experience? Do stuff. Broaden your horizons. Make it about more than your courses and GPA. Yes, those are incredibly important, but they’re nothing if you don’t experience life outside the classroom as well. Besides, getting involved will likely help that GPA.
Aggies are known to be successful both inside and outside of the classroom and one of the great things about Dal AC is that there’s always so much going on. There are tons of opportunities to get involved if you look for them. But don’t be shy! You need to put yourself out there and seize every opportunity you can—no one will be telling you to do it (except for me, of course).
So, here are some ideas of how you can get involved!
[Are you a student on the Halifax campus? Check out ways to get involved at Dalhousie in Halifax]
1. Join a society or a club
The Dalhousie Agricultural Students’ Association (DASA) oversees many different societies and clubs on campus. They focus on everything from aquaculture to drama, so make sure you go to the DASA Club Fair in the fall and find one that works for you.
2. Take part in intramurals
For the sporting types (or anyone who just wants to have some fun), intramurals are available for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, dodgeball, table tennis, and badminton. When you play intramurals you can help your residence (Chapman, Fraser, Trueman, and Off-Campus) gain points as part of DASA’s House Challenges.
Speaking of sports, even if you don’t play them, make sure you get out to some varsity games. Show your school spirit by putting on the black and gold and cheering on the Dal AC Rams!
3. Go to a group fitness class
4. Join the Student Advancement in Leadership (SAIL) Program
Want to get some leadership experience? Taking part in the Student Advancement in Leadership (SAIL) program to get you on your way to broaden all of your leadership skills! Plus, as part of this program you get to help organize the Dal AC Achievement Reception where Dal AC students receive Impact Awards (very highly coveted awards for being AWESOME)!
5. Volunteer on campus
There are a lot of events during the year that need student volunteers, like Discovery Day and Open House. Make sure to check your Dal email and follow the Faculty of Agriculture events page for volunteer opportunities.
DASA is also always looking for volunteers, and constantly organizing events on campus. Follow them on Facebook to stay in the loop.
6. Get involved in residence
If you’re living in residence, here are a few residence-specific ways to get involved:
- Attend an Aggies at Night event. They run during weekend evenings and include fun things like skating, movies, and much more. Check out your residence posting boards for details.
- Take part in residence house events. The residence assistants (RAs) within each residence put on great programming all year long. Grab your neighbours and get involved!
Just keep your eyes and ears open and you’re sure to find ways to get involved on campus and in the community. Trust me, it will make your university experience so much better and you’ll feel like this happy guy:
