If you’re staying in Halifax for the summer, whether you’re taking some classes, working, or live here all the time, you need to make the most of your time here! Halifax comes alive in the summer, so have some fun! Here are 14 amazing things to keep you busy in and around the city.
1. Eastern Shore Cold Waters Seafood Festival, June 3–4
What’s better to do on the East Coast than get some fresh seafood! Head just out of town to Lake Charlotte and taste some of the freshest stuff you’re ever likely to try. Get all the info on the website or check out the festival’s Facebook page.
2. Doors Open Halifax, June 3–4
Check out some amazing buildings and spaces in Halifax that you’ve never been inside before. Some of the places that have been opened to the public in past years include the Junior Bengal Lancers stables, Government House, City Hall, the Dominion Building, and the Old Town Clock.
3. Halifax Public Gardens 150th Birthday Party, June 10
The beautiful Public Gardens are turning 150! Keep your eye on the website for updates on what they’re planning.
4. Backlot Bash, June 17
If you like food trucks and live music this is for you! Head down to the waterfront right behind Garrison Brewery at the Seaport.
5. Halifax RibFest, June 30–July 3
Ribs and entertainment in one place! What more is there to say?
6. Canada 150 Celebrations, July 1
Unless you’ve been sleeping for the last year or so, you’ll know that the country we know as Canada is turning 150 this summer! Check out all the local celebrations.
All national parks in Canada are FREE this summer, including The Citadel downtown and some others in and out of the city.
7. Halifax Lebanese Festival, July 6–9
Food, food, and more food! And music, and dancing, and food. Did I mention the amazing food? And it’s all right at the corner of Windsor and Chebucto.
8. TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 12–16
There’s always great jazz at this festival, but also a ton of other fantastic music. Last year’s edition included Metric, Basia Bulat, Ms. Lauren Hill, Chic, and City and Colour, so you can bet there’ll be another amazing lineup this year. Check the website for updates.
9. Halifax Pride Festival, July 20–30
There is all sorts of things happening for Halifax Pride, including the big parade, the family picnic, and the always popular Dykes vs Divas softball game.
10. Halifax International Busker Festival, August 2–7
A perennial favourite, this fun festival features fantastic feats from street performers from around the world. And it all takes place downtown and on the waterfront. Check the website for updates of performers and schedules.
11. Halifax Seaport Beer Festival, August 11–12
If you’re 19+ and enjoy craft beers from across Canada and the world, this festival at the Cunard Centre is the place to sample some of the best and get some good food and great entertainment.
12. India Fest, August 11–13
If you love Indian culture and food, you’ll want to check out this event at the Halifax Forum! Curry, naan, and pakoras? Yes please!
13. Clam Harbour Beach Sandcastle Competition, August 20
Drop by for the live music, food vendors, and incredible sand creations. And if you’re skilled at making sandcastles, sign up to compete! It’s the quintessential summer day.
14. Day trips!
There’s so much to experience within a couple hours’ drive of Halifax. Go to the Annapolis Valley and visit the local wineries, fruit and vegetable farms, and incredible scenery (the beach at Blomidon and Cape Split hike are definite musts!). Go down the South Shore to visit the shops and galleries in places like Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Drive up the Eastern Shore to see great little towns dotting all the inlets along the coast. And go any way you want to find amazing beaches. Swim, snorkel, surf, whatever. There really is something for everyone!
