This morning we woke up to a temperature that was warmer than normal, hinting to the hot day that lay ahead. A few of the students chose to get up early again and check the live small mammal traps to begin the day. After finding a few rock mice and some multimammate mice we were ready for breakfast.
Shortly after breakfast we all pitched in to assist with the 60 children that were coming to the Amakhala Conservation Center to celebrate World Environment Day. As the kids arrived we all joined in for a game of kickball. The theme this year was reptiles, so we all split up into groups to teach kids a little bit about reptiles through interactive activities and games. All in all, the morning was busy and tiring, lasting until about 12:30pm, but was very rewarding. After the kids had all gone home Dr. Gush explained the concept to us of the Amakhala Foundation. It is an organization that concentrates on giving back to its community. She also highlighted the importance of fostering community engagement through generating income projects (i.e. market garden and beading project) and conservation of the wildlife species.
