We woke up to a cold morning with a slight breeze and had breakfast at 7:30. At breakfast we could see Red Hartebeest and Waterbuck from the deck of the dining hall. After breakfast we had a lecture about experimental design and statistics from Dr. Parker, in preparation for our individual projects. After the lecture we
had a discussion about what topics each student wanted to investigate – projects selected range from bait preference of smaller mammals to species observation of waterfowl in a water habitat to ungulate diversity in different habitat types.
After formulating our experimental designs, a delicious lunch of salad, pasta bake and buns were served. After our lunch break we had a short skills lab about how to set up and use camera traps, which are being used in one of the individual projects, and went out in pairs to set them up around the Tented Camp. While some pairs were still out setting up their cameras, we had our first giraffe sighting from the deck of the dining hall – we were all very excited!
